World's Fair Exhibition Reflection
Through this project, I learned about several other popular destinations of France and their historical background as well as more about the general culture of the country. I especially enjoyed learning more about the historical background of France's most popular destinations such as the Eiffel Tower, the Palace of Versailles, the Louvre museum, the city of Toulouse, and the French Riviera. Improving my knowledge of these historical sites made me more interested in going to France and Europe in general. For exhibition, I recreated a scale model of the Eiffel Tower in the Champ de Mars. I chose this item because it is something that is an easily recognizable symbol of France and has an interesting construction history. I am glad that I chose to recreate this item because it turned out to be a piece of beautiful work. To bring up another point, team C&D also had a France group who also happened to construct their version of the Eiffel Tower, and I felt that it was a good way for guests to compare and contrast our construction styles. The Eiffel Tower that I constructed is made of balsa wood of various sizes held together by wood glue and painted with metallic rust-colored spray paint similar to the coloration of the actual Eiffel Tower in Paris, France. I also recreated the Champ de Mars on a cardboard Amazon box complete with fake trees, grass, small people, and LED lights as streetlights.
Since we were planning a prototype of the Eiffel Tower, what we did was trace our prototype design for each of the four side panels of the tower onto cardboard and cut those panels out using a box cutter. After doing this, we held the panels together using large quantities of hot glue. When the panels were all joined, we stuck the prototype tower onto another piece of cardboard, upon which we cut out smaller bits of cardboard representing trees and the street lights we planned to arrange alongside the tower. This process was helpful to us in determining our final design for each of the panels in every section of the actual tower as well as the arrangement of the base upon which the final version of the tower would be placed. The photos of the prototype tower are shown below. Considering what I saw at exhibition, I would be interested in learning more about the United Kingdom (England?) because of how the advances of the Industrial Revolution were very well presented and researched. I would like to learn more specifically about how the Industrial Revolution hurt the U.K.'s rapidly increasing population, especially the working class, with the advancement of machines that replaced human labor and thus put several thousands of people out of work. I am equally interested in researching the state of other areas of the country at the time besides its rapid financial growth, such as its political situation, overseas conquests and conflicts, diplomatic relations with nations outside of Europe as well as its education system and the institution of the Debtors' Prison.
At exhibition, I believe that while the setup of our booth was very simple, it was mainly centered around the product being showcased and captured the essence of France's cultural aesthetic, which puts more focus on simplicity in presentation as well as decoration while simultaneously catching the eye without being overdone. This was an aesthetic I believe that our group achieved in terms of our product as well as the entirety of the booth. Because of the above reasons, I do feel proud of the booth and the product we presented at exhibition. Our participation in exhibition was also more than satisfactory, as many guests came to our booth to ask what we knew about our country, take advantage of the free food we had, and to view the finished scale model of the Eiffel Tower with the LED lights lit up. In my opinion, exhibition went very well because every country group had amazing booths which impressed the guests and complete research on the attractions and contributions of their respective nations. Every guest who attended the exhibition was amazed at how well we had all prepared to make the exhibition come together the way it did. Our efforts both as individual country groups and as an entire tenth grade team helped make exhibition a success as well as a joy for the guests to attend.
