Exhibition Reflection - January 4th, 2018
The Renaissance was a great period of European history, arguably one of the greatest. It is widely known as the age of revival of Classical culture as well as an age of advancements in mathematics, science, philosophy, literature, and language. In each of my classes, we did projects and learned content which pertained to specific aspects of the Renaissance. In English, I enjoyed learning about the literature and language of the Renaissance. The individual writing piece project especially helped me to appreciate the contributions of Renaissance writers and poets to modern world history and European culture. In History, I generally liked learning everything about the Renaissance from the social hierarchy to the beginnings of the spice trade. The one thing about Renaissance culture that stood out to me the most was how Renaissance people used their past to improve their future (revival of Classical culture as mentioned earlier), and that's something which I feel is still relevant to today. In Math, because we were learning about probability, our project was to research about Renaissance games of chance. I very much enjoyed researching information on my game and presenting it to the class as well as learning others for exhibition night.
On a scale of one to ten, I would say that this project was a 4 or 5 for me because I found it moderately challenging. One aspect of the project that was the most challenging for me was the individual writing piece because normally writing is not my strong suit. However, through good critique and feedback from my peers, I was able to write a well-planned and professional piece. I mainly received critique and feedback on my piece from my friends during a peer editing session. I found their feedback helpful in improving my writing piece as a whole. In the end, I felt that my writing piece was quality work and that all the hours spent staying up working on it had paid off. On exhibition night, guests who read my piece were impressed by the content and seemed interested on learning more about it. My piece was historically accurate and thoroughly researched, so I am justifiably proud of it.
I believe that I did a good job at exhibition because I got really into my character's role and played the part really well. I was also able to interact with the other characters really well, which really helped. I was knowledgeable about my subject as a scholar and was able to interact with guests quite well. I was thoroughly prepared with my costume, content, and what I was going to say. I could thus successfully hold a conversation about my guild and my character's life. One thing I would change about this project if I could would be the format of my writing piece. Instead of a short poem, I could have written a sneak-peek of my character's "latest" book which could have been distributed as fliers. This alternative is very similar to the writing pieces of my fellow guild members who pretended to distribute their fliers in an attempt to "educate the public" on the ideologies of their respective characters.
Renaissance culture and learning still affects the world today in several ways. Shakespeare's plays and other works are now an important part of education, while the theory of a heliocentric universe led us to further explore our solar system. The circumnavigation of the globe by Magellan helped connect empires and unified the world as a whole and Humanist ideals still influence our education system to this day. People of the Renaissance looked to their past to advance into the future and their achievements have made our world what it is today.
